Natural Remedies for Baby Eczema That Really Work

Eczema is something many babies face, causing dry, red, and itchy skin. My own son and daughter were affected in different ways and it was horrible seeing them suffer. As a parent, finding gentle, natural ways to soothe your little one’s skin is a priority. Here are some remedies that have helped many families, including my own, but remember: every child is different. It’s always a good idea to check with your doctor before trying anything new, especially if allergies are a concern.

1. Oatmeal Baths

Oatmeal has been used for ages to calm irritated skin. Adding finely ground colloidal oatmeal to a warm bath can help ease itching and moisturize delicate skin. However, be cautious as some babies might react to oatmeal, so consult your paediatrician or get allergy testing before trying this, especially if you already have concerns it might be a trigger.

2. Coconut Oil Moisturizer

Virgin coconut oil is gentle and moisturizing, with natural antibacterial properties. Applying a light layer after bath time can help lock in moisture and soothe irritated patches.

3. Soft, Breathable Clothing

What your baby wears matters. Clothes made from organic cotton are soft and breathable, reducing the chance of irritation caused by synthetic fabrics or harsh dyes. Our GOTS certified babywear is a great example of this. Browse our gorgeous collection here.

4. Using a Humidifier

Dry air can make eczema worse. Running a humidifier, especially during colder months when heaters dry out the air, can help keep your baby’s skin from becoming too dry.

5. Avoiding Harsh Soaps and Detergents

Many everyday soaps and detergents contain ingredients that can irritate sensitive skin, even those that claim to be safe for babies! It’s best to stick to fragrance-free and gentle cleansers. Try to avoid chemicals like sulphates (such as SLS or SLES), parabens, artificial fragrances, and dyes - these can all cause flare-ups in babies prone to eczema.

A Quick Reminder

Natural remedies can be wonderful, but keep an eye on your baby’s skin. If eczema gets worse or doesn’t improve, reach out to your healthcare provider. Allergy testing can be especially important before introducing new treatments.

With careful care and the right clothing, many babies find relief from eczema’s discomfort. Always prioritise your baby’s safety and comfort and don’t hesitate to seek professional advice.

All the best,
